Speech by President Brian Tidyman On this day 1. Light Horse Regiment took part in what is regarded as one of the last great successful cavalry charges. Waving bayonets overhead, they charged across 6 kl of open ground, cheating bombs, shells and bullets before capturing, in desperate hand to hand fighting, the Turkish trenches that held the key to the strategic stronghold of Beersheba leading to the final defeat of the Ottoman empires hold on Palestine and leaving the Suez canal in British hands. The main reason the charge was successful in the number of casualties was that the Light Horse normally dismount and fight as Infantry, and the Turkish defenders had the sights set to 5. Light Horse were not dismounting, they could not lower the sights on the guns quick enough to prevent the charge. It is unfortunate this great feat has slipped through the cracks of history because of the larger and costlier casualties on the Western Front. This battle took place after a two day ride through the desert to the start point and it is a living tribute to the famous Whaler breed of horse for them to gallop the distance to reach the Turkish trenches. Students came to the Hervey Bay RSL Sub Branch and were captivated by the words of Brian and John ex Army and Ros, which was evidenced by the questions asked during the session and afterwards.
